Queen City Discovery Announces New Exhibit
Last January I teamed up with fellow explorer and photographer Sherman Cahal to create the "Forgotten Cincinnati" exhibit that was on display at Park+Vine. This Fall, friend and photographer Craig Moyer joins us to create "Exploring Cincinnati," an expanded exhibit that features even more photographs from our photographic work and exploring of the Cincinnati area over the past year. Cincinnati, OH – Over the past several decades, Cincinnati has weathered major social and economic upheavals. Exploring Cincinnati, on view at The Betts House from October 3 through November 19, 2009, features photographs by Sherman Cahal, Craig Moyer, and Ronny Salerno. This exhibit of images from the streets of Cincinnati, paired with the history and stories of the locations and communities in the photographs.
In the 1960s, riots took place in cities across the country, including Cincinnati. Vibrant neighborhoods were decimated, resulting in residential communities and business districts blighted by poverty and crime. Although some of these neighborhoods are now poised for a renaissance, others remain plagued by social and economic problems and continue to lose their historic architecture due to demolition and neglect.
Urban disturbances and the growth of the suburbs also affected Cincinnati’s industrial core. Businesses and industrial facilities within the city began moving beyond the outskirts of the city in search of large tracts of land to build sprawling single-story complexes leaving vacant many 19th century and early 20th century buildings in the city.
“This exhibit challenges visitors to see beauty and potential in what could be seen as a bleak view of Cincinnati’s recent past,” says Julie Carpenter, executive director of The Betts House. “Events such as riots and urban flight impact the identity of a city, an experience Cincinnati shares with Washington DC, Los Angeles, and others. We are fortunate that so much of Cincinnati’s historic industrial and residential architecture still exists in Over the Rhine, the West End, and the Brewery District. There is great opportunity to recreate vibrant communities in these urban neighborhoods.”
An opening reception for Exploring Cincinnati takes place Friday, October 2, 5 – 8 p.m. The exhibit will be on view at The Betts House Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and on the following Saturdays, 12:30 - 5 p.m.: October 3, October 17, and November 14. Other days and times are also available by appointment. Prints of the photographs featured in the exhibit are available for purchase

The exhibit will feature three rooms of our work at the historic Bett's House.
