Seattle

Went to Seattle over the weekend for FC Cincinnati’s inaugural Major League Soccer match.

The Moonracers were defeated 4-1, but the first goal of the game was theirs and it was beautiful. Despite the final score, I walked out of Century Link Field just as happy as I’d been during the Open Cup run at Nippert a few years back.

Back in 2012, I had mentioned the Seattle Sounders FC in a post that asked whether or not MLS would ever consider Cincinnati. In 2019, I stood in the stadium of the Sounders amongst hundreds of other Queen City travelers as we sang the songs of our city and the Die Innenstadt flag flew. Another entry in my own personal litany of FCC memories.

It was a bit of a surreal moment, one propelled by the fact that we had boarded an airplane that morning, flown across the country, and been up all day. It was a memory that wouldn’t have been possible without wonderful friends, all of whom I wouldn’t have known if it wasn’t for this team.

I’m incredibly grateful.

I spent the next day exploring a city awash with color and sun in the company of good people.

- DI "on tour" sticker slapped on the carryon luggage.

- Mt. Adams, Little Tahoma Peak, and Mt. Rainier as seen from the airplane window.

- Train from the airport. Seattle's transit system is A+.

- From the roof of our Airbnb.

- Seattle skyline.

- Elliot Bay.

- Shipping.

- Starbucks' headquarters.

- Sodo.

- Downtown.

- The Ross terracotta-style building.

- South Lake Union Streetcar.

- Ghost Alley.

- The Spheres.

- Seattle Center Monorail.

- Monorail interior.

- Space Needle.

- Demolition of the Alaskan Way Viaduct which closed in January 2019. I imagine this overlook/patio is a lot more pleasant these days.

- The Alaskan Way Viaduct looking towards Downtown. Eventually the entire highway will be removed.

- Bank in Beacon Hill.

- Beacon Hill.

- Puget Sound.

- Mt. Rainier.
