Someone was causing a scene down in the alley, enough of one that even Egypt and I took notice. A familiar face well over-served by the nearby bar, she’d taken to screaming at my neighbors as they were attempting to walk a dog of their own. So, from my fourth-floor fire escape, I politely asked the itinerant and inebriated interloper to move along.

“Fuck you, you New York-sounding mothefucker!” she shouted back at me before stumbling away.

I wasn’t trying—and the last time I saw New York relatives in New York City they said I sounded “southern”—but that insult was genuinely one of the best compliments I’ve ever received.

Heritage Bank Center:

I still miss the Gardens, but my feelings towards the downtown arena have evolved from “indifferent” to “slightly nostalgic.” The place isn’t great by any means, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Enjoy The Beehive while you can (although it wasn’t actually open on this day).

Trapbone:

Was sitting at my desk one night and staring into the abyss of my computer screen when I heard a trombone. That’s how I ended up meeting Trapbone.

While chatting with him on the street, some folks yelled from above: “Come get shots from our fire escape.” That’s how I ended up meeting my neighbor, Rob.

Photos on Display at Kings Mills Hospital:

My dad had to go to the hospital. He’s fine, but I figured while he was there he could get a photo of these photos for me.

Photo of my dad taken by my mom.

A few years back, some of my old photographs were purchased for a mural in the recently-built Kings Mills Hospital and I’d totally forgotten about that until I found out my dad was there. The facility sits atop what was once the College Football Hall of Fame and Galbreath Field—a subject I photographed as a kid in 2007, then finally wrote about in 2017.

Galbreath Field in an abandoned state as seen in 2007.

The stadium had several teams and events over the years, but it was notably the first local location to host the United States Women’s National Soccer Team before they moved on to Paycor (Paul Brown) Stadium, Nippert Stadium, and eventually the West End Stadium.

Back with more soon, and in the meantime: may the Lammi be with you.

Since 2007, the content of this website (and its former life as Queen City Discovery) has been a huge labor of love.

If you’ve enjoyed stories like The Ghost Ship, abandoned amusement parks, the Cincinnati Subway, Fading Ads, or others over the years—might you consider showing some support for future projects?
