The Blue Bridge Above the Highway
Above I-71, a bright blue railroad bridge spans the freeway canyon, but doesn't actually carry trains anymore. A remnant of an old rail line, the steel path can still be used as a shortcut over the highway if you know where to find it.
The Ramblin' Boys of Pleasure

Preparing For The Final Bout of 2014
The Cincinnati Rollergirls, the Queen City's all amateur, flat track roller derby team practicing at the legendary Cincinnati Gardens for their final bout of the 2014 season.
Remnants of a Rural Past
There was a house in Mason right off Kings Mills Rd, down the street from the amusement park and nestled off to the side from all the suburban development. It's gone now and long before it so were any occupants.
The Concourse: Part 3 - The Film
Over the past two days, both Cameron and I have shared out photographs and experiences of the now abandoned Concourse C at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). The above is a short film put together that offers another perspective on our visit.
The Concourse: Part 2 - Unaccompanied Minor
I spent many hours of my youth classified as an "unaccompanied minor." My father lived, and still lives, in New Mexico. Including connecting flights, I was racking up eight takeoffs and eight landings a year. Those are solid numbers when you’re eight years old.
The Concourse: Part 1 - Island in a Stream of Runways
Four runways criss-cross the grounds of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). Among them, in an island by itself, is the former "Concourse C." Once a gateway containing portals to destinations across the United States - it now sits quietly with luggage lining the hallways and benches stacked atop each other in closed shops and eateries. The lonely aerodrome is absent of both people and flights, both of which have relocated to the airport's main facilities.
With Snow and Ice, Cincinnati echoes Brooklyn
With the freezing rain and snow coming through this past Sunday, the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge connecting the cities of Cincinnati, OH and Covington, KY was closed due to ice accumulating on its surface. The lack of traffic allowed the rare opportunity to walk right down the middle of the road and see a unique perspective of the Queen City icon as it echoed the views of its Brooklyn brother.
The Shootouts and The Rebirth of Seymour Plaza
Seymour Plaza looked like any other mid 60's shopping center: a long strip of storefronts lining a large parking lot. Through the years it hosted various businesses from auto repair to discount furniture. At the center of its 115,000 square feet of space - the infamous nightclub where a shootout involving rapper and record producer "T.I." began.
QC/D Nominated for City Beat's "Best of Cincinnati 2014"
The good folks at City Beat were kind enough to nominate Queen City Discovery for best blog under the "public eye" section of their annual "Best of Cincinnati" issue.
Jeff Ruby's Floating Restaurant, The Waterfront, Broke Away Again
The Waterfront, a floating restaurant on the Kentucky shore of the Ohio River that offered vistas of downtown Cincinnati, broke away from its moorings again earlier today in Covington, KY. The incident follows a similar one in March of 2011 when the riverfront dining establishment was dislodged by flood waters with around 100 patrons on board before becoming stuck against the nearby Clay Wade Bailey Bridge.
The Only Time You'll See the Stanley Cup in Cincinnati
The Stanley Cup is one of the most revered and hallowed trophies in all of professional sports. Its roots trace back to 1892 and each spring it's awarded to the champions of the National Hockey League. There's only one occasion where you'll catch it in Cincinnati—a city without an NHL team to win it, but a city that almost had one.
The Calm of Carew
Even in the middle of a snowstorm, the Carew Tower observation deck can be the most calming spot in the city...
Best of 2013
My favorite photographs of 2013 from QC/D, personal and freelance work. That's it for this year, see you in 2014.
In Memory of Virgil Souder
Late Tuesday night I received an email that a worker at the Anderson Ferry had died after falling into the Ohio River. I was saddened when I read the name: Virgil Souder. Immediately I recognized it.
Return to Surf Cincinnati
It's been ten years since Surf Cincinnati was abandoned and over five years since most of it was demolished, it was time to go back.
There Has to Be Something Better Than Buffalo Sauce Flavored Sunflower Seeds
It was a Monday night, exactly one week ago. I was sitting at my desk, just like I am now. I'm not hungry, but I keep dipping my hand into a bag of sunflower seeds I pulled out of the pantry. They're flavored with "Frank's Red Hot" sauce. They're not bad, they're not good. I don't eat sunflower seeds, but I've watched enough episodes of the X-Files to know how Fox Mulder cracks them open and drops the shells all over his wooden floors while he's thinking.
But I don't have wooden floors, I have carpet.
Big Macs by the “Big Mac”
Two icons: McDonald's "Big Mac" sandwich and the Daniel Carter Beard "Big Mac" bridge. The pair seem like a perfect match for a corporate fast food marketing gimmick. They almost were.
A Work of Art, A World of its Own and a Cincinnati Tradition
In the halls of Union Terminal, there's a whole other world - a miniature one as vibrant and thriving as the city outside the rotunda walls. A yearly tradition, alive and well representing a bygone era.
