August 2017

I’ve now been doing these monthly posts for a year. One of the things I like about them is that they’re a visual record, a reminder of just how many things can transpire in a time period of 28-31 days.

The Village Troubador

The Village of Greenhills, north of Cincinnati is a charming, little place. It has history dating back to The Great Depression, when the town was planned from its inception as one of three “Greenbelt Communities” established by the Federal Government as part of the New Deal. Unlike most American suburbs these days, snaked with highways and littered with chain restaurants, Greenhills is a lot simpler.

Abandoned Dentist Office

I hate to admit it, but it’s been awhile since I’ve been to the dentist. In fact, the last oral care office I visited was abandoned: no doctor, no box of cheap toys to take as a prize from for having no cavities. A friend of mine working on a nearby project showed me this place.

Postcards From Boston

I love Cincinnati dearly. I’ve been here all my life. I’ve helped support progress and have the utmost respect for those who also strive to see this city reach its true potential, whether it’s their lifelong or adopted home. I’ve been an advocate and preached the glory of the Queen City to all those who’ll listen, whether they be local naysayers, visitors, or people I meet while traveling. Every now and then though, I contemplate what it would be like to leave, go someplace else for awhile.

[Suburbia Lost] McDonald's - Forest Park, OH

In a recent Suburbia Lost entry we took a look at the "pizza hut phenomenon.' I.E. When purpose built structures of restaurant chains and fast food organizations have such a distinct identity it's hard to imagine them being anything else. Oftentimes, these businesses are actually leasing the buildings and when something new opens up, the building's design gives you a direct clue to its history. There's one organization though that never really falls victim to this and that's McDonald's.

An Update to the Story of Galbreath Field

You may remember the "From the Archives" story back in February 2017 about Galbreath Field. The stadium was a high school football venue and once a cornerstone of the departed College Football Hall of Fame. In addition to American football, Galbreath also hosted the Cincinnati Riverhawks, a defunct pro soccer team that came well before the rise of FC Cincinnati.
