Autumn Morning in Covington
Some frames made on a fall morning while shooting for another story in Covington, KY in the shadow of the iconic bridge.
Frames from Sunday September 10, 2017
The corner of 4th/Vine in Downtown Cincinnati and Scott/4th in Covington. Trying to chase some light on a Sunday evening and looking back into street photography while wandering on the bike. Felt like the only people around were either going to/at the riverfront park or disappointed, drunken Bengals fans wallowing about.
The Fall of Celebrity Themed Restaurants in Cincinnati
Willie's Sports Cafe in Covington was once an iconic sports bar named for and once partially owned by a local radio host. It's the latest in a long line of celebrity inspired restaurants in the area to close up shop.
With Snow and Ice, Cincinnati echoes Brooklyn
With the freezing rain and snow coming through this past Sunday, the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge connecting the cities of Cincinnati, OH and Covington, KY was closed due to ice accumulating on its surface. The lack of traffic allowed the rare opportunity to walk right down the middle of the road and see a unique perspective of the Queen City icon as it echoed the views of its Brooklyn brother.
Jeff Ruby's Floating Restaurant, The Waterfront, Broke Away Again
The Waterfront, a floating restaurant on the Kentucky shore of the Ohio River that offered vistas of downtown Cincinnati, broke away from its moorings again earlier today in Covington, KY. The incident follows a similar one in March of 2011 when the riverfront dining establishment was dislodged by flood waters with around 100 patrons on board before becoming stuck against the nearby Clay Wade Bailey Bridge.
Epistles of The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge
The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge isn't pretty - it's tough and gritty. It lacks the iconic majesty of the Roebling, the connection to attractions like the Purple People, the bright colors of the Big Mac and the political discussion of the Brent Spence.
The Shuttered Restaurant Flotilla of Covington
The Ohio River is the lifeblood from which Cincinnati was born. At one point in time, it was littered with steam boats and paddle wheels bound to head west. Even today, it's still a major shipping channel for freight barges. On the shores of Northern Kentucky, where the view of the Cincinnati skyline is a preeminent feature, floating restaurants and attractions took the place of steam boats.
But in Covington, there's a fleet of shuttered vessels that aren't currently serving any customers.
[Views of Cincinnati] #16 - Tonight, Tonight
I was listening to the Smashing Pumpkins song of the same name when I sat down to write the words to accompany this photograph. I'm at a loss for words tonight, so some Smashing Pumpkin lyrics will have to do - they're pretty indicative though.
[Views of Cincinnati] Basic Training
There was a swarm of photographers at Devou Park that night. Many of them were all gathered around one guy with their cameras in hand, he seemed to be giving them a lesson.
[Views of Cincinnati] Left Behind at the Landing
I had been planning to shoot from the river overlook off Madison Ave. at night, but figured I'd walk down that way anyways. A touristy spot, it had the usual nice weather crowd of onlookers out there while an employee of the nearby hotel enjoyed his cigarette. I walked around for a bit, thinking of shots for the future of the project while trying to avoid the goose shit on the ground. I had been here plenty of times, but never noticed the path on the left where I would find the rusted mooring cable that frames the above photograph.
[Views of Cincinnati] Directly South, Pointing East
A view from atop the Covington Transit Center parking garage that appears directly South of the Carew and 4th and Vine buildings. Normally views from Kentucky feature the river in the foreground. Not here. The river is replaced by the concrete wall and its piping, the rusted copper of the lightning rods has begun to leave green stains on top of the wall and the markings on the ground point Eastward.
The Night That Covington Stood Still
"He came down to the scene like a captain coming to his ship," or something like that, is what I overheard one of the news reporters behind me saying while I stood with the crowd.
