The End of Suburban Cincinnati's Alpine Chalets

Originally envisioned as an alpine lodge to complement the nearby amusement park, the Kings Island Inn and Resort attracted the likes of the Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch. In its later years, it changed with the times and fell from its role as part of a "Midwestern Disney World." In the coming days, it's headed for demolition.

The Concourse: Part 1 - Island in a Stream of Runways

Four runways criss-cross the grounds of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). Among them, in an island by itself, is the former "Concourse C." Once a gateway containing portals to destinations across the United States - it now sits quietly with luggage lining the hallways and benches stacked atop each other in closed shops and eateries. The lonely aerodrome is absent of both people and flights, both of which have relocated to the airport's main facilities.

With Snow and Ice, Cincinnati echoes Brooklyn

With the freezing rain and snow coming through this past Sunday, the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge connecting the cities of Cincinnati, OH and Covington, KY was closed due to ice accumulating on its surface. The lack of traffic allowed the rare opportunity to walk right down the middle of the road and see a unique perspective of the Queen City icon as it echoed the views of its Brooklyn brother.

The Shootouts and The Rebirth of Seymour Plaza

Seymour Plaza looked like any other mid 60's shopping center: a long strip of storefronts lining a large parking lot. Through the years it hosted various businesses from auto repair to discount furniture. At the center of its 115,000 square feet of space - the infamous nightclub where a shootout involving rapper and record producer "T.I." began.

The Only Time You'll See the Stanley Cup in Cincinnati

The Stanley Cup is one of the most revered and hallowed trophies in all of professional sports. Its roots trace back to 1892 and each spring it's awarded to the champions of the National Hockey League. There's only one occasion where you'll catch it in Cincinnati—a city without an NHL team to win it, but a city that almost had one.

Big Macs by the “Big Mac”

Two icons: McDonald's "Big Mac" sandwich and the Daniel Carter Beard "Big Mac" bridge. The pair seem like a perfect match for a corporate fast food marketing gimmick. They almost were.

Epistles of The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge

The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge isn't pretty - it's tough and gritty. It lacks the iconic majesty of the Roebling, the connection to attractions like the Purple People, the bright colors of the Big Mac and the political discussion of the Brent Spence.

Signs of the Streetcar as Seen in Atlanta

Love it or hate it, Cincinnati's modern streetcar project finally broke ground last year after being upheld by voters twice. Meanwhile, several other American cities, such as Atlanta, are also building modern streetcar lines.

Cinemagraph - "Entering the Queen City"

My first attempt at making a "Cinemagraph," a still image with slight motion. What can often be an elegant and beautiful way to capture and convey a moment or place in time can also be a huge pain in the ass in photoshop.

Just north of Cincinnati in the city of Montgomery, Ohio there's an abandoned car dealership. Its vast, wide lot is devoid of cars and inside there's no salespeople to be found. Good deals aren't the only ghosts left behind on the moldy showroom floor; there's also the ghost of a Cincinnati legend - Marge Schott.

The Wasson Way

If you drive into Cincinnati from the west side and look out over the sprawling network of railroad tracks, industrial cargo and airport-like control tower that watches over the massive rail yard, it's hard to imagine that any railroad in the city would go unused.

The "Ghost Ship"

The slow, choppy waters erratically splash up against the obstruction, banging an offbeat rhythm onto an island of rusted steel. As the Ohio River flows toward the Mississippi, its waters make their way through the American Midwest. Roughly 25 miles downstream from Cincinnati, some of the water diverts to a gap on the southern shore into a creek and up against a ship that seems to have docked for the last time. It's a vessel that fought in two World Wars, served as a yacht, set the scene in a pop star's music video, carried one of the world's greatest minds, and shuttled tourists around the nation's largest city - all before it found itself left to be forgotten by time and history in the murky waters.

[Suburbia Lost] Captain D's - Sharonville

The people of this nation deserve "freshly prepared seafood at reasonable prices," or so goes the credo on Captain D's website. Unfortunately for those who live near this former seafood eatery on Chester Rd. in Sharonville, they'll have to travel the seven seas a little further these days to get the captain's freshest catch and his corporate branding.
