The Observation Deck Atop Carew Tower
Made some photographs from the Carew Tower Observation Deck back in November of 2017 and never got around to posting them or attaching them to a different story until now. Always love the two elevator rides and walk up the stairs to this place. If you want to catch it in the evening, winter with the time rolled back and a scarcity of daylight is your only seasonal chance. Wear gloves and a real coat, it's windy.
From the Pitch
I had the opportunity to join the incredibly talented Alex Vehr for this past weekend's FC Cincinnati match. It was great to have a new perspective on a game and get back to photographing soccer while first place FC Cincinnati took on Ottawa Fury FC at Nippert Stadium.
Some of the Coolest Thank-You Notes I've Ever Recieved
A few weeks ago, I spoke to some kids at a local school about fading advertisements/ghost signs, my book from 2015, and the kind of work I've done here on QC/D for the past decade.
[Fading Advertisements] Fort Wayne and Angola, IN
A few ghost signs logged while on a recent, quick trip through Indiana. Only had some time for quick and casual research so if anyone familiar with Fort Wayne or Angola, Indiana history has some info to share, let it be known in the comments below.
[Suburbia Lost] Toys "R" Us, TGI Friday's, and Michel Tires Plus - Springdale, OH
In Springdale, north of Cincinnati: a Toys "R" Us that was abandoned well before the company faced its current death via bankruptcy, a tire store, and a TGI Friday's.
Toynbee/House of Hades Tiles: An Update
When one of Cincinnati’s “House of Hades”street tiles seemed marked for death—not all ended up being lost.
"Sawyer Point"
I love Phil’s work, not just for his prose or the way he composes and executes wonderful photographs, but for the subjects he chooses to cover. The way he looks at the city, the things he finds interesting. He does good work over at Cincinnati Refined and in his personal time too. When I came across his story about chatting with one of the men behind designing and building Bicentennial Commons, I was reminded about a greenspace in the city that can be overlooked these days, but is still an icon in the landscape. A place I used to find myself frequently.
Hawaii 2
Today I learned: the television show “Hawaii Five-O” got its name because Hawaii was the fiftieth state admitted to the Union, NOT because “five-oh” was some sort of common radio code for police officers. After the show aired, the term “five-oh” became slang for cops.
Also: saw a coffee plantation, lava flows, a black sand beach, the small green rocks that make “green sand,” an orchid farm, a macadamia nut factory, waterfalls, botanical gardens, popsicles, views, and the diverse landscape of Hawaii.
Throughout Indiana
Another year, another Memorial Day Weekend, another brief road trip throughout Indiana.
3 Points Urban Brewery
I'll admit, when I first got the invitation to attend a preview night of 3 Points Urban Brewery, I was skeptical.
Kings Island
I've taken so many thousands of pictures at Kings Island over the years.
As a guest: a kid armed with disposable cameras and 35mm rolls.
As an employee: using my first digital camera after shifts while enjoying rides with my friends and later using my cell phone's lens to document things I needed for my paperwork and reports.
It's been six years since I was last at the park, a story for a different time.
April 2018
A week late. Almost. But I've had the monthly post thing going for almost two years and I didn't want to let the streak die. Only one other post this month, but tons of stuff on a to-do list and a metric ton of drafts that I haven't had time to finish yet. Ran a 10K, though.
Dispatch from a Waffle House in London, Ohio
I woke up late this morning. I barely remember silencing the alarms on my phone except for the fact that I did it multiple times. I’m not sure if I forced myself to get up too early with not enough sleep or if I’m not sleeping well at all. I’m not really wanting to go to a doctor to find out. I should probably just go to bed earlier on a consistent basis. Nevertheless, I can usually wake up with no issues on days where I’m excited to do something other than go to work. Yet, here I was, scrambling to get out the door facing the usual time based anxieties, but a different destination.
March 2018
Photographs made in February 2018 that didn’t necessarily fit into a larger story and were posted three days late.
