The Abandoned Railroad Trestles of Ault Park and Their Future
Over the years, people have casually mentioned the railroad bridge towering over Red Bank Rd. as a suggestion of another abandoned location to photograph. Sometimes, they’d also recommend the “hidden” one, another forgotten trestle in the woods, just west of the big one.
Cincinnati North Hotel Demolition From Above
Yesterday I published an article about the demolition of the Cincinnati North Hotel, a massive 10-story abandoned hotel in suburban Cincinnati that was also formerly a Best Western, Ramada, and Sheraton. We first explored this place in its abandoned state a few years ago, checking it out from top to bottom while an oblivious guard sat in a car out front. I hadn't seen the roof since that night, until today. My friend Jason sent in these photos he made over the past weekend from his drone. These awesome images document an "iconic eyesore" of the suburban landscape from a unique perspective. From the feedback of yesterday's article, it seems the hotel is all rubble as of today, with the site beginning to be cleared.
The End of The Cincinnati North Hotel
North of the city, a massive and abandoned hotel is finally coming down. Once a familiar structure on the suburban skyline, it finally had its date with the wrecking ball.
From the Archives Part 7: Indiana & Ohio Railroad Cars
Abandoned railcars from a bygone era of travel once sitting in Southeast Ohio.
From the Archives Part 1: The Oakley Drive-In Theatre
I've decided to start digging up some old stories that never really made it here to QC/D before. In the first part of this series, we take a look at the Oakley Drive-In Theatre as well as what became of it and what's there now.
[Suburbia Lost] Tex-Mex and Asian Fusion of Union Centre - West Chester, Ohio
A local chain and one from Louisville try to make a go of it in West Chester's late 90's/early 2000's development.
Retro Surf Cincinnati Commercials circa 1988.
If you've followed QC/D for awhile you may be familiar with the saga of Surf Cincinnati. It was the first abandoned place I ever truly explored and photographed. On top of that, its story hit on several personal notes: I went here a lot as a kid and exploring an abandoned amusement park always made me reflective of the years I spent working in one myself. Photographs of the park when it was active are few and far between, and until this one, I had never seen a video or commercial from the park pop up online.
The Dayton Arcade
I had heard about it for years, occasionally seen photographs, but to see it in person. I was taken aback.
The Remains of Surf Cincinnati: A Followup
The story's been told here before. It's a place we spent countless hours exploring. It's a place many of us visited in its prime. It's a place documented here on QC/D in several articles. Ten years after first stepping foot into its abandoned state, I went to go see what, if anything, was left after the demolition.
Fueled by nostalgia, the story of Surf Cincinnati continues.
The Demolition of the Kings Island Resort
About a year after demolition paused, the Kings Island Resort is finally coming down. Highlighted two times previously here on QC/D, this brief follow up captures the complex's final days.
[Suburbia Lost] United Dairy Farmers - West Chester
In the closed building's windows, a nearby church steeple is reflected. So is the gas station/convenience store of that same brand that replaced it... directly across the street.
Urban Exploration Meets Oil On Canvas
Artist Nicole Trimble uses photographs featured in a QC/D story about an abandoned shopping center and controversial nightclub as references in a new piece.
Black Friday in Retail Purgatory
In Cincinnati’s northern suburbs there’s a shopping mall stuck in retail purgatory. Born of a grand vision, the nearly empty complex of consumerism has never truly found success. In a followup to a 2009 article, we revisit “Forest Fair.”
A Hidden Tunnel In Mason Ohio
Back in the woods of a suburban town, there's a small tunnel supporting an old railroad.
The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike
Up to that point I had never had a more terrifying experience while driving. I was trying to keep an eye on the semi in front of me, following his movements while avoiding smashing into him. Behind me: a continuous line of yellow lights presumably trying to do the same thing.
Demolition of a Residence
A few weeks ago on a bike ride, I came across the remains of this house in Fort Thomas, KY.
An Update on the "Dayton Executive Hotel"
The Dayton Executive Hotel originally opened in 1962. Initially a 225-room hotel that offered a unique and upscale restaurant, the lodging establishment would delve into an eyesore just off the interstate. We explored it back in 2012, but thanks to my friend Mike, we have this update.
"Abandoned Midwest:" 2015 Photo Calendar Now on Sale
On sale starting today, "Abandoned Midwest" is a collection of photographs from some of the most popular QC/D articles to date.
QC/D Featured in Roman Luck's "Project Someone"
A few months back, local director Roman Luck contacted me about being featured in his "Project Someone."
Human Aqueducts by the Highway
Ancient Rome built aqueducts to carry water to the cities, modern Americans build them for entertainment. In some cases, both varieties become ruins of the past.
