On Vacation
Currently on vacation in Northern Michigan. I'm writing, relaxing and returning soon with stories of Cincinnati history, fast food nostalgia, forgotten airports, suburbia, Dayton and men in prison. In the meantime, here's what the top end of the "Lower Peninsula" looks like.
Saw the Streetcar For the First Time
Back in November, the first of Cincinnati's five streetcars was delivered. Since then, the second has arrived with the rest of the fleet heading here via Spain and Elmira, New York. The vehicles and system are currently undergoing an extensive, federally mandated testing process with the full system slated to open in September. Recently, I finally crossed paths with one of the trains while it was testing.

Black Friday in Retail Purgatory
In Cincinnati’s northern suburbs there’s a shopping mall stuck in retail purgatory. Born of a grand vision, the nearly empty complex of consumerism has never truly found success. In a followup to a 2009 article, we revisit “Forest Fair.”
Last Book Signing of 2015
This coming weekend I'll be having my last book signing of the year for my new book Fading Ads of Cincinnati.

Overlook Lodge: Inspired by Kubrick and Cocktails
For the first time in my life, an offer of moonshine was followed up with milk and cookies.

The Former Crest Hills Country Club
In a small Ohio village, where the population hangs just below 4,000, there's a park. It's trails are former cart paths and it's gleaming waters are former traps, once the nemesis of golfers who were willing to pony up a hefty yearly membership fee. Then there's the clubhouse, where the wedding receptions no longer happen, the sunday brunches are no longer served and the pool out back is empty aside from algae ridden, stagnant water.
"Fading Ads of Cincinnati" Available November 30th!
Over the past year I partnered with The History Press to photograph and author my new book: Fading Ads of Cincinnati. On November 30th, it'll finally be released!
Searching For the Time, Searching for The Chance to see a Historic Ship
I was sitting at my desk. On the main computer monitor: a combination of Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop displaying photos in various stages of editing. On the secondary monitor: a browser window, providing real time GPS tracking of the USS LST-325 as it steamed towards Cincinnati. All around me half of my possessions were in organized piles on the floor, the others tucked away in boxes.
Cincinnati & The 86th All-Star Game
For the first time since 1988 (and the fifth time overall), Cincinnati hosted a Major League Baseball All-Star Game. For the 86th rendition of the "Midsummer Classic," the city was transformed as the best players in all of baseball converged on the Queen City.
The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike
Up to that point I had never had a more terrifying experience while driving. I was trying to keep an eye on the semi in front of me, following his movements while avoiding smashing into him. Behind me: a continuous line of yellow lights presumably trying to do the same thing.
The Price Hill Masonic Lodge
Some of Cincinnati's most iconic buildings were designed by famed local architecht Samuel Hannaford and his Sons: City Hall, Music Hall and the Observatory are a few. In the city's East Price Hill neighborhood, a stoic Hannaford designed structure sits at the corner with hopes that it could see prominence once again.

Mishaps at Rabbit Hash
This went from my favorite story idea to a cautionary tale very fast.
